The potential uses for HIFU were being researched as early as 1940s with a continuation of research into the fifties and sixties by one ambitious researcher at the University of Cincinnati on its potential effectiveness against brain tumors. Unfortunately, the medical community was unwilling to take the possibility seriously and it took the development of research in other nations to initiate a rebirth of interest in the technology. The first machine designed specifically for medical HIFU applications was not created in the United States until 1994 when it was allowed to be used for benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH. The usage for Prostate Cancer trails began in the United States in 2006 and currently the usage has been accepted for a variety of Cancer and other treatments. It is unfortunate that the medical community did not focus on such a promising treatment option earlier. Feel free to check it out.
